The SEO community member Ian Nuttall has been closely monitoring the indexing state of 49,345 websites ever since the March 2024 Core Update introduced a crackdown on AI-generated spam. Ian Nuttall’s observations allow us to understand the broad effects of Google’s recent effort.

Of the 49,345 websites in Nuttall’s monitoring process, 837 have been entirely obliterated from Google’s search index. This number equals about 1.7% of the data set in question.

Significant Traffic & Revenue Losses

As such, the sudden drop in traffic is clearly harmful to the sites. In addition, the impact is expected to result in a loss of $446,552 in monthly displayed advertising revenue from all websites affected by this deindexing.

Targeting AI-Generated Spam

A recent dive by Originality.ai also supports Nuttall’s finding. They looked at how much AI-made content was on the kicked-out sites. They found that 100% of the affected sites displayed AI-generated content, with 50% having 90-100% AI-generated content posts.

As demonstrated, Google’s March 2024 Core Update punishes spammed websites that overly use AI to game the search rankings. Google’s penalization of these sites further cements its resolve to crack on spam and AI-made bad content.

Timeline
